Plant Sale 2008
Warm weather is here and it is now prime time to start digging small divisions of your perennials to share with the Women’s Association PLANT SALE. Our sale benefits the Women’s Crisis Center at the DuPage YWCA. We get 25% of the total sales of the greenhouse plants and 100% or the sales from the home-dug plants. Every plant you dig from your garden rewards us greatly. If it isn’t convenient to pot them yourself, you can bring them any time to the back patio at 322 N. Bruner Street where the potting elves will pot them and keep them watered until Plant Sale time. Or, if you need help digging, call Ruth
Finlay at (630) 323.4715 or Eleanor Patterson at (630) 887.0978.
Women’s Association Plant Sale Friday May 9, 8:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Bronswood Greenhouses, 3805 North Madison, Oak Brook.

What
is the Women's Association?
It is a group
of Union Church Women of all ages who gather for fellowship, informative
and entertaining programs, and to offer support to the church, to each
other and to many benevolences.
What
are "units" and how do I join one?
A unit is
simply a smaller group of women within the Association who get together
once a month at the home of one of the unit members for socializing, a
brief program, and short business meeting.
New members
are always welcome in any unit at any time.
The different
units meet at different times to try to accommodate a variety of schedules.
The locations
of the various unit meetings each month are published in The
Good News, and below:

and ask for the ECP office to make

Contact
Us
To join a
unit, simply come to a meeting that is convenient for you, or contact
Barb Keller, Vice President for Membership by email
or phone at (630) 323.8135.
If
I'm not in a unit, how can I participate in Women's Association?
In addition
to monthly unit meetings, on the third Thursday of each month, we offer
programs that are open to everyone. (View our Calendar
of Events.)
Is
child care available?
Yes! For
all daytime Women's Association activities, you may make a reservation
with the Early Childhood Program (ECP) Office at Union Church. The Association
offers this service at no charge to you, but reservations in advance are
necessary. Call ECP at (630) 323.3314, and specify that you are
attending a Women's Association function. |
Outreach
The warmth
and joy of friendship and fellowship are what makes Women's Association
so special. But combining fellowship with outreach to others is what completes
the Women's Association experience.
We reach
out in a variety of ways:
Financial
Support
With contributions
to a wide variety of agencies and programs totaling more than $27,000
in 2004, Women's Association Giving represents a significant portion of
the church's overall outreach.
The members
of the association are the ones who decide where the money goes. We do
like to focus on agencies and programs that especially benefit women and
children.
The money
is raised from our three major annual fundraisers:
- Resale (held in October)
- Rudolph's
Boutique and Bake Sale (held in November)
- Plant
Sale (held in May)
We also collect
a "loose change" offering at each unit meeting and program.
Each member has the option to toss whatever loose change she may have
into the collection. This past year this very casual fundraiser resulted
in more than $500 donated to Women's
Opportunity Fund.

listing of Women's Association Giving for
2005.
Service
As a member
of Women's Association you have many options to be of service to others,
but no requirements!
Opportunities
vary from year to year according to needs in the community and interests
of members. For example, this past year our members had the opportunity
to cook and serve a meal to the residents of Interfaith House in Chicago.
On another day, we packed cookies to be distributed by clients of The
Night Ministry. As opportunities to serve arise, they will be posted here,
so check back often.
Golden
Friendship
Each month
a few volunteers accompany one of our ministers to visit residents of
local retirement facilities. We socialize with the residents and assist
in a brief worship service and communion conducted by the minister.
This very rewarding and uplifting experience takes place one morning
a month. No one is required to participate, but the opportunity is always
there. Volunteers will be scheduled at unit meetings.
Friendship
& Support
It's the
intangibles of feeling cared for and supported that make being a part
of Women's Association so special:
We
first came to Hinsdale as a young family with three children. We didn't
know anyone in the area and lived far from our parents. After visiting
the Union Church, I was invited to attend a unit meeting. Over the years,
the Women's Association has continued to be a source of support and
deep friendships. I hope other women can benefit as greatly as I have
from participating in Women's Association.
How
grateful I am to have found the welcoming, warm feeling of the Womens
Association! I moved to Burr Ridge two years after becoming a widow.
I became acquainted with Union Church through my daughter, and attended
my first unit meeting in early 2004. I felt that I immediately had a
roomful of friends. I continue to meet new people, each with new life
experiences. Womens Association is one of the highlights of my
life.
